How to disable auto play in Windows Vista
I constantly load Cd's and usb device's all day long. If your like me then you probably fidn the whole Auto Start anyoing. In XP it was'nt that bad but in Vista you have like 20 options. Ok maybe not that many but it's still anoying. Not to worry we have a way to show you how to disable autoplay in Windows Vista.
Click the windows Start button on the bottom left and then select Control Panel, then click on "Play CDs or other media automatically".
Now all you have to do is uncheck the bxo that says "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices". This will disable it for all devices. USB, CD, DVD, Flash media drives, the works. Some say this does not work on the Home version. It has always worked for me but as with every Windows OS their are at least three ways to do something.
Change Vista Auto start for one device
Alternatly if you want some devices to work and others not to you can follow this. Keep "Use AutoPlay for all media and devices" checked. Now underneath that dialog box you will see every device listed for auto play. Select the drop down box for each device and then select the action you want to take. Just click "Take no action" if you do not want anything to happen.
Change auto start for just USB Drives
to put it bluntally you realy can't. This is becuase windows does not see it as a removable device persay. They takea look at what's on the dirve. To disable vista auto start for USB drives you need to disable AutoPlay for the removable drives, you should change all of the following to Take no action: Software and games, Pictures, Video files, Audio files, and Mixed content. You should also keep in mind that programs like Kodak easy share like to take over some of these functions. For that you have to edit those program settings.
USe Group Policy to disable Windows Vista auto play
You can only use this option if you have the ultimate or business version. Group policies do not work on the others.
Click on the Windows vista Start button and type gpedit.msc in the start menu search box. Now you will have to go to Windows Components \ AutoPlay Policies, and change the value of "Turn off Autoplay" to enabled.
This option works great for multiple accounts if you do not want to have it enabled. Personally I feel it takes away from people. I know many people like to customize their experience.
Disable with Our Hack
We have not written one yet :( I know for home users you will need this so over the next week or so we will post one for you. You can go through the registry to do this but it's just easier for you if we write you a batch that does it.
The above should work and now you know How to Disable Auto Play in Windows Vista. Share the knowledge with others and this site.
