Bruce,

I take it your computer was under warranty. HP is a good company and they do take care of customers. It seems many people here are mad because they have had an issue. This post was only suposed to be made for one and one reason only. the DV9000 recall issue for the WLAN card. NO OTHER ISSUES and not all DV9000 computers will fall under this recall. Only a select number of systems.

If you have no warranty and your computer is not part of a recall then yes you should expect to pay a few hundred to 500 bucks to get your computer fixed. That is the way the world works.

I am closing comments on this thread as it is not serving any purpose any more.

I called HP, pre-paid second-day Fedex shipping box arrived a few days later. I sent out my dv9000 lap-top. Five days later I received it back repaired. They replaced the system board, audio cable and cap. I am blown away by the service that I just received, especially after reading the horror stories on this forum. In fact, I have always received top service from HP. I guess, they must like me or something. I'll continue to buy HP products, as long as they keep giving me this type of service.

i called HP on saturday (6/6) and was told i purchased the laptop in march 2007 and it was out of warranty and would not be repaired under the recall. i was told it'd be $400 to fix and there was nothing else that could be done. a follow up through email gave the same reply, chat on their site got a bunch of troubleshooting steps i started off explaining i did already - no other solution given. i need this laptop fixed. it's insane over $1000 only lasts you a little over two years.

My dv9000 was purchased three years ago and I've just recently had the same problem with my wireless internet not working. I called HP support and they instructed that I would have to send in my computer and for them to do a diagnostic it would cost around $375 (DID NOT MENTION A RECALL). I later did some research and found that there was a recall on the laptop. I was never informed of the recall and when I called hp back they explained that my computer was out of warranty and that the recall expired in March 2009 (STILL DID NOT MENTION THE RECALL UNTIL I BROUGHT IT UP). I then asked for a phone number in the US so I could speak with someone about not receiving notice of the recall. The "case manager" that I spoke with said that he is going to make a deal with me and only charge $100 to replace the motherboard, WOW WHAT A DEAL, still wanting me to pay for a faulty product!!! I cannot take the computer back to where I purchased it... since Circuit City is now out of business.

Has anyone had their motherboard replaced after March 2009, due to the recall???

I just chatted with someone on the chat thingy on the HP website. If you ask me it's not a "someone" at all. I think it's a computer that recognizes certain responses and answers accordingly. I couldn't get anything about a recall. They instead asked me what a recall was for this model. I asked several times if I was talking to a person or computer....no answer. I'll try again tomorrow. Maybe I will get a person.

ANA, Trish, Erockone, and Ed - Instead of calling HP, or chatting with an un-knowledgeable tech support person following a small book, take it back to the store you bought it at! It's very easy for HP to argue with one customer, as they don't care and it won't make a difference to them if you don't buy HP again.
Even if your warranty is up, you can probably make a deal with the store saying you bought a $1300 laptop, and since it doesn't work, you're out a lot of money. If they have any sympathy and knowledge of the recall, they might do it for free or just charge something like shipping and handling, which is well worth it.
The people on the phone and internet aren't all that smart, and they simply follow a flow chart telling you what to do. I spoke with an internet tech support person, and I clearly told them that I have tried reinstalling all of the drivers and Windows Vista - the response? "Try reinstalling all drivers by going here...etc". That's when I just closed the chat window and arranged to go to Future Shop the next day.
