On to how we will fix your computer and remove Vundo. If you were recently infected then you are far better off then someone who has had it for months. The first thing I want you to do is download several programs. All are free to download and run. The only one that will cost money with is Spyware Doctor but I’m not saying you have to buy it. We will use it last to do a final scan. If it does not find anything great we know all traces of vundo are removed. Down load but DO NOT INSTALL the following yet. Save all three in a location were you will remember like the desktop.
Now hit the windows Start button and select “All Program” > Accessories > System Tools > System restore. Start the restore process. Choose a date when you KNOW you were not infected. If you just noticed you started having popups last week then go back 2 weeks. I would always go back an extra week. This will not fully remove the virus but undo damage done. You will not loose any pictures or documents but any software installed after the date you choose will be uninstalled along with some of the vundo traces. Your computer will auto reboot during the restore process. Take this time to unplug the internet cable from the computer as we do not want to be re-infected.
Once your computer re-boots log back in and wait till you see a box saying something like “System Restore Complete”. Re-boot your computer and enter into safe mode by pressing the F8 key on boot-up. Keep pressing the F8 Key until you see the DOS like screen and then select “Safe Mode with Networking”. When asked if you would like to continue or do a system restore just select YES to continue. Make sure you log in under your normal account name. PLUG THE NETWORK CABLE BACK IN.
Install Vundofix. Run using the default settings. This can take about 20 minutes but not much longer and normally around 10. If vundo fix says it can not remove some traces allow it to run on the next startup but do not reboot just yet. Remove everything Ccleaner found and Vundofix found. Now install Spybot S&D and be sure to run the immunize program when asked and update the program. You will be asked if you want to create a registry backup. I would go ahead and do it just in case something goes wrong. Now run the Spybot program and let the scan do its thing. On normal computers it will take about 30 minutes. On slow computers it can take over an hour. Once Spybot has run. Remove everything it found. If it says it found items it could not remove allow it to run on startup. Reboot you computer normal like.
If any of the above programs asked to run they will start running before the computer fully boots into windows. The programs are re-scanning your drive. Go get a cup of tea and watch some Stargate Atlantis or SG1. The scans will again take 30-60 minutes. Once done log into your computer.
Do NOT surf the web just yet. Install Spyware Doctor and update the program. If you installed Spybot then the program Tea timer will bug you a little about the changes to the system. Allow the changes for Spyware Doctor as we want the program to run. Make sure to update the program and ten do a full scan. If the scan finds more spyware traces then you Know you are still infected but most likely not with Vundo any more. If the scan shows nothing then YEAAA!!!! You are not only Vundo free but have NO spyware left on your computer. Most liekly you will still have to change your home page but other then that enjoy. BE SURE you have proper protection so your computer does not get infected again. The fact you had this in the first place means your protection was not good enough. Some may say free programs are good enought but they are WRONG. You get what you pay for so go out and purchase some good software. Spyware Doctor and Trend Mirco are my personal top picks.
