PC to PC File Transfer | XP to Vista Data Transfer
This Article is a guide on File and settings transfer fo XP to Vista or XP to XP as well as ME and 2K to Vista. Another alternative is to just use Laplink PCmover to migrate your software, files, preferences and even registry settings from XP to Vista. This is recommended if you are not technically inclined.
( Great news! Laplink contacted us and gave us a $15 dollar off coupon. This coupon worked in the middle of 2010 so it may still be good! Use the code CJPH7Q when checking out. www.PCmover.com )
The age old question when you get a new PC is how to go about doing file and settings transfer. Well if you do not want to transfer over programs then you can always just use the Built in Windows easy file transfer software. This works for both Windows XP and Vista.
Many people find this software a little hard to setup. It really is not that hard to use the software itself it’s more a matter of how to transfer the data. With the easy transfer wizard you have an option to do a file and seting transfer over a network, via ad-hock (computer to computer connection), burn data to a disk or even copy it onto an external hard drive. The USB hard drive and network are the simplest ones to use. The one issue is many people do not have an external drive or a network setup. In that case burning the data to a CD is the best option.
File and Settings Transfer the Easy Way
We will cover the Easy transfer wizard a little more in-depth in a second. First off if you are not computer savvy and want to save time and frustration then you should consider using data transfer software that is made just for file and setting transfer. I use Laplink PC mover for most of my customers. With this software you get a crossover cable. The cable allows you to do the data transfer in one swoop. Basically you just plug the cord into both systems and then install the software. From there you can choose to copy over everything like custom settings, outlook, programs, files, .doc, music the works. After that you install the software on the other computer and make it the destination system. From there you hit enter on both computers and sit back while all the user accounts and files and settings transfer over. Laplink is Vista capable and the only software I know of that transfers over programs as well as settings and files. This software comes with the data transfer cable as well.
Windows Easy Transfer Wizard
If you do have a network setup or an external hard driver and have no desire for the programs then the Windows Easy Transfer Wizard will suffice. To start this you click on the Windows Start button and browse to All Programs > Accessories > System Tool > File and Settings Transfer Wizard. Hit the Next button. Now select what computer this is. Is it the Old one or the new one? It will take a second while your computer thinks. Now select the destination for the files. Now you will be given the option of transferring over just files, just settings or both. In the right column you will see the program settings that will transfer over to the new system. It is recommended that you install any software first on the new system before transferring over the data. Once done run the same wizard on your new computer but this time select New Computer. Now browse to were the files were stored and hit next. Reboot and you are done.
At the time of this writing I have been unable to find anyone who does this service online for people. If you know of a company that transfers settings and documents over then post a comment to let others know.
If you are concerned in anyway about loosing data are the Windows transfer Wizard looks a little over whelming then go with Laplink PCmover and don’t even worry about it.
