Upgrade from XP to Windows 7
Many people out there with a existing XP operating system may want to upgrade to Windows 7. However Microsoft does not support any such upgrade path. Acording to Microsoft you have to wipe out the existing XP operating system and then install Windows 7 fresh. Of course this is problematic for anyone out there who wants to keep all their personal files and currently installed programs.
There is good news in all of this. A program called PCmover Upgrade Assistant can fully upgrade your Windows XP operating system and all files and programs to Windows 7. As of right now this is the only option out there to upgrade from XP direclty over to Windows 7 with out fully deleting the XP operating system first.
Before you upgrade to Windows 7 on an XP machine you should do a couple of things. First off you should still backup your important data first. This will ensure if anything does go wrong you have a backup of what you absolutely need. Next I would recommend that you pre-download the needed drivers for your computer. If it's an HP, Dell, Gateway or any other popular brand you can find the Widnows 7 drivers on the manufactuers website. If no driver are listed under the support section then contact them first through support to ensure drivers have been made for Widnows 7. This will ensure all your devices are going to work just fine after you upgrade from XP to Windows 7.
After you have all the needed drivers downloaded or at least verified to Work on Windows 7 then you can purchase the PCmover Upgrade Assistant program here. Again you have no other options out there for upgrading your operating system from XP to Windows 7 with out wiping the hard drive out except for the PCmover Upgrade Assistant program. However the silver lining in this whole process is it's cheap and very straight forward.
Now for the very EASY PART
Step 1. Install PCMover Upgrade. Again is can be found here. Register the product and run the wizard. Follow the step by step instructions for the Wizard. It is very straight forward.
Step 2. Insert the Windows 7 CD and select the “custom” option. THIS IS IMPORTANT!. You need to select the custom option and choose NOT to format the drive. If you format the drive you will defeat the whole upgrade.
Step 3. You will need to re-install the PCMover Upgrade software again on the new Windows 7 operating system. Then it will walk you though the migration and you will have all your documents and programs installed.
It reallly is that easy to use. The total time will depend on how many files you have and the like but it is very simple to do.
This software will work for all 32 bit migration to 64 bit and vise versa. It is the only way to go.
